ABOUT
Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan, also known as Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park or Patna Zoo, lies off Bailey Road in Patna, Bihar, India. It first opened its gates to the public as a zoo in 1973. This park garners the title of being Patna’s most popular picnic spot, drawing in over 36,000 visitors on New Year’s Day alone in 2022.
VISION AND MISSION
Following the guidelines of the National Zoo Policy (1998), Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, Patna, has framed its objectives as follows:
Firstly, the park aims to conserve and breed various species, particularly those endangered and endemic to the Gangetic Plains region. This preservation effort extends to biodiversity, involving exchanges with other zoological parks and rehabilitation of suitable species into the wild.
Secondly, the park emphasizes research and scientific study on animal behavior, diseases, feed and nutrition, and reproductive biology. Such studies contribute to a deeper understanding of wildlife management and conservation.
Moreover, the park is committed to promoting nature education and raising awareness about wildlife conservation among visitors.
Furthermore, it seeks to establish itself as a training center for veterinarians, keepers, and wildlife professionals, leveraging its expertise in captive wildlife management and zoo design.
In addition, the park prioritizes providing healthy and wholesome recreation to visitors while ensuring the safety and well-being of zoo animals. However, it emphasizes that recreation should be incidental and not the primary objective.
Lastly, the park endeavors to develop its facilities to serve as a rescue-cum-rehabilitation center for wild animals in distress, furthering its commitment to wildlife welfare and conservation.

FACILLITIES
BATTERY BASE AUTO
In June 2011, a new mode of transportation called the battery base auto was introduced at the Patna Zoo. This battery base auto is like a small vehicle that runs on batteries instead of gasoline or diesel. It’s designed to carry visitors around the zoo so they can easily move from one area to another without having to walk long distances.
The battery base auto is a convenient way for people to explore the zoo, especially if they have trouble walking for long periods or if they want to see as much of the zoo as possible in a shorter amount of time. It’s like taking a little tour around the zoo while comfortably seated in the auto.
These battery base autos are environmentally friendly because they don’t produce harmful emissions like traditional vehicles. Instead of polluting the air with exhaust fumes, they run quietly and cleanly on electricity stored in their batteries. This helps to keep the air in the zoo clean and safe for both visitors and animals.
Using the battery base auto can be a fun experience for families and groups of friends visiting the zoo together. It allows them to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the zoo without worrying about getting tired from walking too much. Plus, it gives everyone a chance to see a wide variety of animals and attractions without missing anything.
MAYUR CANTEEN
The Mayur Canteen is a food service facility located inside Patna Zoo that introduced modern amenities and services on September 15, 2012. This canteen is designed to provide visitors with a convenient and enjoyable dining experience while they explore the zoo.
Unlike traditional food stalls, the Mayur Canteen offers modern services to enhance the dining experience for visitors. It is equipped with four counters, which means there are multiple places where visitors can place their orders and get served efficiently.
The canteen serves a variety of food and beverages to cater to different tastes and preferences. Whether visitors are craving a quick snack, a refreshing drink, or a full meal, they can find something delicious to enjoy at the Mayur Canteen.
The introduction of modern services at the Mayur Canteen signifies a commitment to providing high-quality amenities to zoo visitors. By offering a comfortable and hygienic dining environment, the canteen aims to ensure that visitors have a pleasant and memorable experience during their visit to the zoo.
The Mayur Canteen is not just a place to grab a bite to eat; it’s also a space where visitors can take a break, recharge, and socialize with friends and family. With its modern amenities and diverse menu options, the canteen adds value to the overall zoo experience and contributes to making the visit more enjoyable for everyone.
