The Bankipore General Hospital in Bihar and Orissa was provincialized and renamed the Patna General Hospital on April 1, 1981. Initially, it had 240 beds and an annual expenditure of Rs. 51,872. Later, in 1925-26, it transformed into the Patna Medical College Hospital due to the establishment of a Medical College. In 1928, the Radium Institute from Ranchi was relocated here. By 1930, it had 513 beds, including separate departments like Surgery, Medicine, and ENT. Management shifted to a medical college professor in 1932 and a full-time superintendent was appointed in 1935. In 1948, a Children’s Hospital was inaugurated, and a new surgical block named after Dr. Rajendra Prasad opened in 1955.

Hospital Condition

Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) is undergoing a major upgrade to become a much larger hospital with 5462 beds. This upgrade was approved as part of a plan by the Bihar government in November 2018. The new PMCH will cover a vast area of 72.44 lakh square feet. It will also have more seats for medical students, with 250 seats for undergraduate students (up from 150) and 200 seats for postgraduate students (up from 146).

The project will cost Rs 5,540 crore and will be managed by the Bihar Medical Infrastructure Structure Corporation Limited. The new hospital will be connected to the under-construction double-decker flyover along Ashok Rajpath and Loknayak Ganga Path (Ganga Expressway). Additionally, the new building will be constructed using a technique called Seismic base isolation, which helps protect it from earthquakes. It will also have a helipad on its roof for emergency medical transport.

It this is the sixth oldest Medical College of British India which comprised of present day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afganistan etc. It has a memorable history and has the credit of producing and treating many national dignitaries. To name a few, the Grand Daughter of The Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi was operated upon in Patna Medical College & Hospital, Patna. Mr. Chandrashekhar, ex-Prime Minister of India was also operated upon in this medical college.

Dr. Dukhan Ram, our ex-Principal and an eminent ophthalmologist was the honorary surgeon to Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the First President of India. Initially, there used to be 35 admissions per year which was increased to 170 but at present 200 students are admitted in each batch on the basis of competitive tests. Postgraduate course was started in the year 1932 and at present the college is conducting postgraduate and diploma course in almost all the specialities and super spececilities.
